Radon in Well Water: The Source Hiding in Your Shower

Most people picture radon as a basement problem — gas seeping up through the slab from the soil. That's the main event, and for the overwhelming majority of homes it's the whole story. But if your house is on a private well and you've mitigated the soil side and the air number still won't behave, there's a second door radon can come through: the water itself. And the place it shows up loudest is the shower.

How radon gets into well water in the first place

Radon comes from the natural decay of uranium in rock and soil. Groundwater moving through uranium-bearing bedrock — granite, certain shales, some metamorphic rock — dissolves radon straight out of the stone and carries it up your well. That's why this is almost entirely a private-well issue. Municipal water sits in open reservoirs and treatment tanks long enough for most of the radon to escape to the air before it ever reaches a tap. Private well water goes from bedrock to your faucet in a hurry, radon still dissolved in it.

The number that matters: the 10,000-to-1 rule

Radon in water and radon in air are measured in the same unit, picocuries per liter (pCi/L), which trips people up because the two numbers live on completely different scales. Air radon is a problem at 4 pCi/L. Water radon is measured in the thousands. The rough rule of thumb the EPA uses: about 10,000 pCi/L of radon in water contributes roughly 1 pCi/L to the air in your house as that water gets used. So a well testing 20,000 pCi/L in water could be adding around 2 pCi/L to your indoor air all by itself — enough to keep a home stuck above the action level no matter how well the sub-slab system works.

The danger from radon in water is mostly the part you breathe, not the part you drink. Every time you shower, run the dishwasher, or fill the washing machine, agitated water releases its dissolved radon into the room air — and a hot shower in a small bathroom is about the most efficient radon-release machine there is.

Drinking it vs. breathing it

There are two exposure paths, and they're not equal. Breathing the radon released from water as you use it around the house is the larger risk by far — same lung-cancer pathway as soil radon. Drinking radon-laced water carries a smaller, separate risk to the stomach and digestive tract. The National Research Council's work for the EPA found that the inhalation route accounts for the large majority of the risk from waterborne radon. Which is why the fix targets getting radon out of the water before it can off-gas into your air.

How you actually fix it

Two proven approaches, and the order matters:

  • Aeration (the preferred method). The system bubbles air through the incoming water in a tank, strips the radon out, and vents it safely outside — above the roofline, away from windows. It removes the radon rather than concentrating it, and it's what EPA points to as the best available technology for the job.
  • Granular activated carbon (GAC). The water passes through a carbon filter that traps the radon. It works and it's cheaper up front, but the carbon accumulates radioactivity over time, so the tank needs correct siting and eventual disposal handling. It's better suited to lower concentrations.

Either way, treat the water where it enters the house (point-of-entry), not at a single tap — because the exposure comes from every fixture that agitates water, not just the one you drink from.

Joe — the septic-ignoring, well-neglecting legend himself — finally put in a radon system after years of nagging, and his basement number dropped nicely. But the living-room test still came back stubborn, which made no sense to Joe. What Joe forgot is that Joe is on a well, and Joe takes long, scalding showers in a tiny upstairs bathroom with the door shut. He wasn't measuring soil radon up there — he was measuring his own shower. A water test came back in the tens of thousands of pCi/L. One aeration unit later, the whole-house number finally settled where it should have. The soil was only ever half of Joe's problem.

The bottom line

If you're on a private well, mitigating the soil side is step one — but if the air number stays high afterward, test the water before you tear the mitigation system apart looking for a leak.
