Do Air Purifiers or Houseplants Lower Radon?
You got a radon result over 4.0 pCi/L, you started Googling, and you found a hundred pages selling you an air purifier, a fancy houseplant, or the advice to 'just crack a window.' It all sounds reasonable. Radon's a gas, purifiers clean air, plants clean air, fresh air is good. So they must help, right?
Mostly no. Some of it barely helps, some of it does nothing, and one of it can even backfire. It's worth understanding why, because the wrong fix leaves you thinking you're protected when your number hasn't actually moved.
First, what radon actually is
Radon is a radioactive gas that seeps up out of the soil and enters your home through cracks, the sump, and gaps around pipes in the foundation. It's constantly being pushed in by the pressure difference between the soil and your house. That last part is the key: radon isn't a one-time cloud sitting in your air waiting to be filtered. It's a steady leak. As fast as you'd clean it up, more comes in from below.
Air purifiers
A HEPA air purifier is built to trap particles — dust, pollen, smoke. Radon is a single gas atom, thousands of times smaller than anything a HEPA filter catches. It sails right through. Some purifiers with activated carbon can grab a little radon temporarily, but they saturate fast and simply re-release it, so they don't meaningfully lower your long-term level.
There's a subtler point too. Part of radon's danger comes from its radioactive decay products — tiny particles that attach to dust and lodge in your lungs. A purifier can pull some of those particles out of the air, which sounds like a win, but it doesn't touch the radon gas itself, and the gas is what keeps generating new decay products. You'd be mopping the floor with the tap running.
Houseplants
This one's a flat no. There's no evidence that any houseplant meaningfully reduces radon in a home. Plants are wonderful. They are not a radon control device. If a product page implies otherwise, that's marketing, not measurement.
Opening windows
Ventilation genuinely does dilute radon — while the windows are open. Crack every window and your level really will drop for a few hours. The problems: you're not leaving your windows open all winter in most of the country, and opening the house can lower the indoor pressure in a way that actually pulls more radon up out of the soil once things settle. As a permanent strategy it doesn't hold, and a short-term test done with the windows open just hides the real number.
What actually moves the number
The proven fix is sub-slab depressurization — a mitigation system. It's a pipe run from beneath your foundation slab up and out through the roofline, with a quiet inline fan that runs 24/7. Instead of cleaning radon after it's inside, it captures the gas under the slab and vents it above the house before it ever gets in. It attacks the leak at the source, which is the only approach that reliably drops a high number down to a safe one.
Sealing obvious cracks and the sump helps a mitigation system work better, but sealing alone usually isn't enough — there are always more paths than you can find. The fan-and-pipe system is what does the heavy lifting.
Joe — the radon-shrugging, well-neglecting, septic-ignoring legend himself — tested at 8.1, panicked for exactly one afternoon, then bought a $200 air purifier and a big leafy plant for the basement and declared victory. He felt great about it for a year. When he finally retested to prove how smart he'd been, the number hadn't budged. The purifier had cleaned his dust beautifully. The radon had kept right on seeping up through the slab the entire time. A real mitigation fan later, Joe tests under 2.0 and has stopped giving the fern credit.
The bottom line
